8^th series – race 1 of 5

“A huge thank you to everyone that came out today for the 2021 edition of the Northeast Delta Dental Race To The Top Of Vermont today!

 

We knew the forecast was going to be touch and go, and we were hoping that we'd sneak by with minimal wetness. But, it wasn't to be!

 

About 30 or so minutes before the start of our first wave the skies opened up knocked down all of the dust. Conditions eased up soon after Wave 1 started and then more or less held off for the rest of the event.

 

It's a bummer we could not provide the views we normally do. But, it was pretty sweet seeing all of the finishers emerge from the fog to cross the finish line.

 

This event is a fundraiser for the Catamount Trail Association, and supports the CTA's efforts to develop backcountry terrain, protect Vermont's mountain land, and increase access to the outdoors for everyone.”

Congratulations to Joe Gray & Kim Dobson on their wins, Joe’s 5^th and Kim’s 6^th! Kim was also inducted into the Hall of Fame, as was Brandy Erholtz who placed 8^th.

Weather was, well…epic! For the women’s race on Saturday, (from the website) 

“However, the big star of today’s race was Mt. Washington and the famous weather. What looked like a rainy day hours before race time, turned into a mostly sunny and muggy start. During the first several miles runners were treated to relatively sheltered winds and fairly dry conditions. Dobson took full advantage of the conditions and was on a record setting pace, with a course record and a $5000 bonus in sight. As the race hit the five mile mark Dobson was still setting a record pace, but it was here that the weather took control and center stage. What was a relatively nice day was erased all at once. From mile five until the end, runners were greeted with forty to fifty mile per hour winds with gusts over sixty. If the winds were not enough, the fog was so thick that visibility was diminished to almost nothing. Dobson quipped when she was done that she was not concentrating on her times, but just running the best she could. When asked if she was ever looking over her shoulder, Dobson responded with “it wouldn’t do any good, I wouldn’t know if anyone was there.”

On Sunday, the conditions were a bit better;

“Like the women on Saturday, the men were setting a blistering pace in the pleasant, lower elevations. But, as the runners approached 5000 feet, the conditions became blustery, the fog (clouds)

rolled in, temperatures dropped, and the speeds suffered.”

Conditions ranged from this to sunny blue skies!

Feel I should also mention that Donna, Jackie with Cambridge Sports Union Teammate Lisa Doucett crushed the 60+ team record by over 12 minutes! These same amazing women, 10 years ago, won the 50+ team title! Talk about staying @ it…

Winning the 7^th NEUHMS were Rich Larsen & Tammy Richards! Finishing 2^nd were Jackie Shakar & Mark Staples with Kevin Cavanaugh & Freddie Lynne Triback 3rd, congratulations! They have also earned a 2022 NEDDMWRR by-pass (by finishing 4 of the 5 races) as have Jeff, Sau-Mei, Darrel, Jim, Robin & Ed, Brian, Karen, Donna & myself. Way to hang in there!!!
