Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race
9th series – race 5 of 5
Saturday, June 17, 2023 – Pinkham Notch, NH

We sure had an epic end to the 9th Northeast Uphill Mountain Series! Thank you so very much to everyone that made this happen; Great Glen & Crew, Sponsors, Volunteers, Runners, their Family and Friends!!! 😎

By popular demand, there will be a 10th series! Information on joining follows the pictures @ the end of this post. It will have the same 5 races, as it has been, starting with the Race to the Top of Vermont Sunday, August 27th, followed by the Mt Greylock Road Race Sunday, September 3rd; links below. Finish 4 of the 5 races to earn a lottery by-pass into the 2025 NEDDMWRR.

After the races, please send me any pictures that you take for possible use in the next update AND it would be great if you would do a write-up of your day to include!

Thank you so much to Joe Vigor, Brian & Freddie and Ellen Raffio for some of the additional pictures AND Robin and Jeff for their race reports!!! You can access Joe’s race pictures here…      Joe Viger Photography (jvsportsphoto.com)

“I know I was very determined to finish the race…

I know I’m a back of the packer, feeling good at the 1/2-way time 1:24.

Like my Ascutney time... kept on… then the bad weather hit… still feeling strong, no cramps.

I just had to follow the yellow line.

Didn’t even see the wall…but I went right up it…crossed the finish line and was directed to the observatory to get out of the wind…😎

Many Thanks to all the volunteers and to all the Mountain Goats out there…Great friends!

This was my 4th time….next year I will just volunteer…Robin” 😎

“Rain. Wind. Fog. Cold. Wet. That about sums up Mt. Washington for this year. We haven't had a decent day to run this race in 5 years. This year, terrible weather, last year, only half a race, the year before was women Saturday, men Sunday, no visibility, the year before that, no race at all. Before that, my memory is showing its age. I've run 33 straight years, this year was the worst for weather. A friend of mine ran his 40th straight this year, and he told me it was the worst weather he's run in. That's saying something. The odds for a decent day next year are the same as they've always been, but we gotta get a good day sometime.

If you run 30 races a year (that's a lot), and you do it consistently for 30 years (that's a long time), then you've run 900 races. I've run north of 1200. Not many races put butterflies in the old tum tum. Mt. Washington does. When they say 'go', I know the effort that lies before me. It's 7.6 miles of running in an equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion, between wanting to finish strong and wanting to put your hands on your knees and praying to the running Gods. The steeper and tougher it is, the stronger the feeling. And Mt. Washington is the grandaddy of them all. The Uphill Series had a strong showing, NMC had a record number of finishers at Mt. Washington this year, 28 I believe. Anybody and everybody that ran this year can put a feather in their cap, and can claim to have run the biggest mountain in the northeast under the most horrendous conditions the race has had.

By a looooooong shot, the toughest runner on the course was Robin no last name necessary. She challenged that pile of rocks and ice for 3h18m32s? Honestly, I wish I could do that. She has more balls than my pool table. She should have followed Ed into the Marines. She would have put fear into the hearts of more than a few. Maybe even a Drill Instructor or two. She sent me a great picture. When you see me, ask to see it.

I miss Peter Wallen and his antics. And if you have to ask, you don't know.

Mt. Washington was an experience that we should all be proud of. Until next year....................Jeff”

Congratulations to Joe Gray & Amber Cullen Ferreira on their wins!!!

This was Joe's 7th win, putting him in a 3-way tie with Bob Hodge and Kim Dobson for most wins!

Amber is the first woman from New Hampshire to win in 33 years!

The 10th series will consist of the same 5 races (Mansfield, Greylock, Prospect, Ascutney and Washington) you must complete 4 to qualify for a lottery by-pass!

Mount Washington  will count, IF you get in. In order to meet series requirements for MT Washington, you must enter the lottery. If you don’t get in email me your notice of not getting in and you will  still be considered  a “Mountain Goat” towards a lottery by-pass, if you complete the other races.

Each “Mountain Goat” will also receive a custom certificate…suitable for framing!

Lottery by-pass:

You must complete at least 4 races. Up to 30 runners will be able to earn a lottery by-pass into the 2024 Northeast Delta Dental Mount Washington Road Race. If fewer than 30 runners join the series, all will have a chance. If more, the first 30 to join will be eligible to receive a by-pass, after the first 30, additional members will be put on waiting list.  To clarify, if one of the first 30 runners to sign-up doesn’t complete the requirements, the next person who qualifies for a lottery by-pass moves up, etc. Placement of your entry into the series will be determined by the date and time your sign-up email is received by me AFTER “the checks are in the mail”. Send an email to mtnrunr@comcast.net to let me know and you wish to join. After you complete each race, email your time to me, PLEASE! Times will be as listed in the official results, so if you disagree with your time you must straighten it out with the RD.  I will calculate and keep track of points, etc.

Requirements to join the series:

1)           Send a tax-deductible check for $15 made out to “America Trail Running Association” (ATRA), PO Box 9454, Colorado Springs, CO 80932

OR you may join for $25/year link here Individual Memberships — ATRA (trailrunner.com)

Please indicate “neuhms - team support” on your check memo line

2)          Send a tax-deductible check for $15 made out to Mount Washington Observatory, PO Box 2310, North Conway, NH 03860

OR you may join for $25/year link here Mount Washington Observatory | Membership

Please indicate “Northeast Uphill Mountain Series” on your check memo line

Tremendous thanks to the Mount Washington Auto Road for the lottery by-passes! If your going to be in their area, please be sure to check and see what’s going on! https://mtwashingtonautoroad.com/

Thanks to my local club, the Red Clover Rovers for providing money for the “Mountain Goat” certificates you will receive after the series is completed.

Placement will be based on total points from your best 4 races (which is how everyone will be scored).  Whoever wins the race gets 100 points; everyone else’s points will be calculated by dividing the winner’s time by your own. Example: winner’s time is 1 hour, yours is 2 hours. Your points would be 50.00.

Let others know about the series that you think might be interested and HAVE FUN!
