The typical weather
concerns for a Labor Day Weekend race are how hot and sunny it might be or in
rare cases could there be a thunderstorm. This year however, Mt Greylock set a
new standard for mountain racing "fun". It was pouring rain with
temperature in the 50s before the start but conditions improved to the point
where there was only some light rain as the gun sounded at 8:30. The first few
miles on the steeper sections of the course were fine but, somewhere around
mile 3 to 4 depending on how fast one was running things changed considerably
for the worse. Strong 20 to 30 mile/hour winds and driving rain with
temperature on the low 40s were in force for the less protected sections of the
course from mile 5 to the finish line . All of the volunteers deserve a huge
"thank you" for being out and doing such a good job in that weather.
Not much of the usual post-race finish line exchange of race stories took
place, with a spot in front of the fire in the Bascom Lodge seeming to be where
people wanted to be. Walter

Once again thanks for
organizing this series. As far as my race went, I was pleased with my
race overall given the nasty conditions we all faced. The only saving grace we
got that day was at least we weren't at mount Washington as that would have
probably been close to unrunnable. First "bad"weather day I've
experienced in 2 years at these mountain races so overall not much to complain
about. Thanks again, Kevin

I hope somebody got some pics, and
that they came out. Tough day for scenery. Cold rain, low visibility,
especially at the summit. No socializing, mostly people scrapping for a ride
down, a challenge in the weather. Anyway, hope Meg found somebody. Keep in touch.
Jeff

It was 44 degrees at the top, raining hard with a solid wind (wind
chill ???) and we were soaking wet by the time we got there. Not much camera
action I suspect or hot dog weather.
You missed a lovely day. Bob

Running up a mountain in
inclement weather is always an adventure and Greylock proved to be no
exception. Most of the runners did not appear too disturbed by the heavy rain
just before the start. Was I the only one who took this as a bad omen? There
was an air of restless anticipation as the runners congregated at the start to
begin the 8 mile ascent. The first 5 miles were a steady uphill with just a
light rain falling. Runners were attired in everything from trash bags,
waterproof gear to shorts and short sleeve shirts to shirtless - brrr. Didn't
they know the temperature was in the 40's?? Why was everyone so happy? For many
runners it was their final race for "GOAT" status through the
mountain series. For some of us it was our second race in the Uphill series.
Wow! As Fred would say, " 40% there!" Conditions changed drastically
for the last mile and a half. The wind and the rain increased in intensity with
every turned corner and the fog rolled in to make visibility difficult. Luckily
there were some flatter sections so one could accelerate to keep warm. I began
to feel the elements sapping my strength even though I wore a waterproof
jacket, gloves and my trusty wool socks. The thought of a toasty warm car, dry
clothing and some nourishment spurred me to the finish. At the top, the
drenched and elated runners were rewarded with a warm lodge, comraderie, and a
sense of accomplishment for conquering the mountain! Elaine
